5 Tips to Help You Generate Top Keywords

5 tips to help you generate top keywordsIf you have an inbound marketing strategy in place, then chances are you’ve probably heard of SEO. Many companies use SEO strategies in order to increase their website’s online ranking in order to draw in more web traffic – thereby increasing exposure of their brand.  However, what many companies don’t understand is that the selection of your keywords takes a lot more consideration than they might think. Weak keywords are going to do a poor job of increasing your company’s web ranking. In order to be successful at increasing web traffic, you need to generate top keywords. The following are five tips that will help you generate top keywords for your SEO strategy.

1. Research your target audience

Don’t assume you know who your target audience is. This is a big mistake. Knowing who your core customer base is will help you figure out what kind of keywords to use. For example, say your company produces software. Don’t assume that your target audience are consumers using your software at home. Your audience could very well be made largely out of corporations who are buying your software for the use of your employees. This means that your keywords should be more centered on office culture and corporate use instead of home life and use. These things matter, since the keywords you choose will attract certain types of consumers. If you sell mostly to corporations, then you don’t want to attract web traffic that is made up of homeowners.

2. Use keywords that target your location

If you have a physical location, then you’ll want to make sure that you draw web traffic from individuals in your area as this will give you a greater chance at conversion. This is especially true if you don’t have an e-commerce section on your website. If you are selling office supplies at your store but not online and you are located in Florida, then it won’t make sense for consumers from any other part of the country to visit your website since they cannot buy your products or services.

3. Avoid the use of broad keywords

Companies that aren’t willing to put in the time in order to generate top keywords often end up using overly broad keywords in their SEO strategy. The broader your keywords are, the more companies you are competing with. For example, using the keyword “software” means that you’ll be competing with hundreds of companies out there that produce hundreds of different educational software programs. A more specific keyword, such as “educational math software” is going to have less competition, meaning consumers looking for that particular product are going to have a better chance at finding your site.

4. Use long-tail keywords

Long-tail keywords are much more specific and longer than more general keywords. You should make use of these in addition to your normal length keywords for one reason. Even though they are less common and will attract less web traffic, your long-tail keywords will bring in traffic that you have a much better chance of converting to leads. For example, a long-tail keyword for a software company could be something like “5th grade math educational software.”

5. Research your keywords

In addition to figuring out your target audience, you should research the strength of your keywords. You can use tools such as WordTracker and Keyword Discovery in order to help you find keywords to use throughout your content, but you should also put some effort into judging their effectiveness. You can do this by running a PPC campaign. This will allow you to test out your keywords on pay per click ads, thereby being able to see how many clicks certain keywords are getting.

Using these tips to generate top keywords will not only increase your web traffic but will also make sure that your traffic is easier to convert into leads.
